This series aims to help members of the Canadian commercial real estate industry understand, address, and dismantle systemic racism in the workplace.

Part Three: Dismantling Anti-Asian Racism in Canada

Friday, May 14, 2021, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM EDT

In Part Three of our series, we will focus on the recent tragic increase in violence against Asian and Pacific Islander communities in North America, and how commercial real estate and wider communities can work to dismantle anti-Asian racism in Canada. The discussion will explore:

  • Why anti-Asian racism is unique, with aspects such as the "perpetual foreigner" myth, the model minority principle, code switching, and the increase of the "yellow peril" myth in the aftermath of COVID-19,
  • Individual vs systemic racism,
  • Current leadership and the next generation of leadership, and the need for disruptive leadership,
  • The way forward.

The webinar will be moderated by Michael Brooks, CEO, REALPAC.

Speakers:

  • Leslie Woo, CEO, Civic Action
  • Teresa Woo-Paw, Chair, Canadian Race Relations Foundation
  • Gary Yee, Director on the Board, Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice (CCNC-SJ)
  • Anna Kennedy, COO, KingSett Capital (opening remarks)
